A few days ago, Disney Research ® announced their latest innovation: “Quasistatic Cavity Resonance for Ubiquitous Wireless Power Transfer”, a.k.a. “Wireless Charging Room”, which is a room for charging your devices as soon as you step inside, without needing to connect or place them on any specific charging base. The idea of this room is that people can just stay there, doing their stuff, while their gadgets get charged automatically. Alanson Sample, associate lab director & principal research scientist at Disney Research. said to Phys.org that “This new innovative method will make it possible for electrical power to become as ubiquitous as Wi-Fi”.

Look at the video published by Disney Research’s YouTube Channel:

This video has generated buzz in Internet, but only because of the technology – which is already quite innovative – but because it’s coming from Disney! Yes, the same guys that we’ve always known for creating animated movies about talking toys and happily ever after love stories, actually have an entire business unit dedicated to technology and innovation, with nine research areas, such as Computer Vision, Robotics, and Human-Computer Interaction, among others. You can read more about them in their website here:

It’s very inspiring to read how Disney Research combines industry and academia to engage the community with their research projects. So, for those of us who might be sceptic about the research career path, because we might think it’s too theoretical or even boring, well, the also owners of the “Happiest Place on Earth” might prove us wrong!
